Want to know how well your brain performs relative to your age?
This test calculates the age of your brain on the basis of your performance - the better you perform the younger your "brain-age", the worse you perform the older your "brain-age". The calculation is based on the robust inverse correlation of performance with age shown for the spatial working memory test (Tournier et al. 2004). Scientific studies indicate that such tests can be predictive of future dementia, even up to 10 years prior to onset (Small et al. 2000).

The critical importance of the right antioxidants

Like all other organs in your body, the functional capacity of the brain deteriorates over time. The most common reason for loss of brain function with age is Oxidative Stress that occurrs naturally but with detrimental effects. In fact your brain is the most susceptible organ in your body to the deleterious effects of oxidation due to the intensive energy production and oxygen consumption in our brains. The brain is the most active organ in your body when it comes to using oxygen. Although it only makes up 2% of your body mass, it receives 20% of the total blood flow and it consumes 20% of your oxygen uptake. Therefore, it is your brain that needs the most protection from oxidation.

Many scientific studies advocate the consumption of antioxidants to combat the deleterious effects of oxidative stress on the brain. However, clinical studies using vitamin antioxidants to reduce oxidative stress in the brain have not shown any improvements in brain performance. Even the highly promoted Ginkgo extracts have not shown significant benefits in cognitively intact individuals. Therefore, some researchers have suggested using more powerful antioxidants such as plant derived procyanidin flavonoids to combat oxidation in the brain.

Enzogenol® is the first such flavonoid antioxidant to show significant improvements to brain performance in healthy humans. In a controlled clinical trial on healthy older people carried out at the Brain Science Institute at Swinburne University in Australia, Enzogenol® was able to significantly lift cognitive performance compared to the control group which received vitamin C only (Pipingas et al., Phytotherapy Research, 2008).
